The Complete Pre-MOT Checklist

Twelve quick checks that dramatically improve your chances of a first-time MOT pass.

A short inspection before the MOT can reveal simple failures that are inexpensive to correct.

Outside the vehicle

Check every lamp, tyre pressure and tread, mirrors, number plates, wipers, washers, and visible windscreen damage. Ask someone to help confirm the brake lights.

Inside the vehicle

Make sure seat belts latch and retract, warning lights behave normally, the horn works, and the driver's view is clear.

If you are unsure

A pre-MOT inspection can identify wear or safety issues without pretending to guarantee a pass. Repair only what is supported by the inspection evidence.
